A blood pressure monitor is a medical tool used to measure blood pressure and detect possible pathologies related to abnormal values. This monitoring can be done by health professionals, but also by individuals in the context of self-measurement of blood pressure.

The device is composed of a cuff connected to a box that displays the results after measurement. The cuff is equipped with sensors that collect data to determine the pressure value.

Often placed on the arm, the cuff inflates automatically, compressing the patient's artery. The gradual deflation of the cuff then provides the data needed to calculate the blood pressure value by algorithm and display the results on the screen.

Wrist blood pressure monitor :

Practical and small, the wrist blood pressure monitor works in a similar way to the upper arm blood pressure monitor. Since it is placed on the wrist, the measurement may be less accurate than the arm measurement.

However, it is generally more compact and smaller, making it easier to carry.

Upper arm blood pressure monitor :

The upper arm electronic blood pressure monitor is more cumbersome and may require the assistance of another person to apply the cuff. This model is placed at the same height as the heart and gives a very accurate blood pressure reading. The electronic upper arm blood pressure monitor is the most recommended by medical professionals.

The right size of the cuff and the right positioning of the cuff will give an accurate blood pressure reading. Both upper arm and wrist monitors can also measure heart rate.

How to use an electronic blood pressure monitor ?

The use of a blood pressure monitor depends on the model chosen :

  • For the upper arm monitor : the patient should be resting for 5 to 10 minutes in a comfortable position, while placing the arm on a table. The palm of the hand should be turned towards the ceiling. The cuff should be placed on the biceps. Finally, you just have to switch on the device and wait for the end of the measurement, which is usually notified by an audible alert.
  • For the wrist monitor : for this type of monitor, it must be placed on the wrist. It is important to ensure that the wrist is relaxed, keeping the hand open in a natural position. After switching on the device, the patient should not move until the end of the measurement to obtain a reliable result.
