Digital ECGs represent the natural evolution of electrocardiography towards connected, smart devices that are integrated into the digital ecosystem of the medical practice. Automatic waveform analysis, internal memory, network connectivity and export to the electronic health record: these features improve diagnostic efficiency and facilitate long-term patient monitoring.
The main advantage of digital ECGs is their clinically validated automatic interpretation software. These algorithms detect and flag the main abnormalities – arrhythmias, repolarisation abnormalities, ventricular hypertrophy – and automatically calculate the waveform’s timing parameters (PR, QRS, corrected QT). A valuable tool for GPs wishing to ensure the accuracy of their interpretation, or for high-volume departments requiring effective pre-screening.
Modern digital ECGs integrate with hospital information systems via USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Bluetooth. Exporting tracings in PDF or HL7 format to medical software facilitates archiving and sharing with referring cardiologists. Certain models allow real-time remote transmission for remote interpretation, which is particularly useful in practices located far from a specialist cardiology centre; models includeSpenglerEdan, Cardioline, Amedtec and Schiller.
